Wednesday
Currently typing with one arm in a cast propped on a pillow, but my fingers work so that is good.
Sunday
Went to work as usual, finished everything by 1130 decided to go on a ski break. Claire and I headed out, did about four runs and decided to head back. On an easy run, I started to go a little fast... caught my front edge.... fell backwards.... hit my elbow... heard it go crack really loudly.
Started screaming that I was hurt and all these people stopped and were asking if i was ok. Claire had to take her board off and run back up the hill.
Luckily for me, Woolly, a person in a giant wooly mammoth costume, was skiing past when it happened and he radioed ski patrol to come get me. All I could see was a big giant elephant looking down on me and people coming up and asking whether they could have their photo taken with woolly. It was very surreal.
Ski patrol arrived and tried to lift my arm to put it in a makeshift splint. They picked it up and it was all floppy. Then they put me on a sled and zipped me up in a big bag and skied me down to the bottom. It was scary.
The ambulance was waiting and Claire rode down and came in the ambulance too. I didnt cry but I was breathing like you see women who are in labour breath. They wouldnt give me any morphine cause they said my blood pressure was too low. I begged and they eventually gave me 10ml which didn't do much really.
Got to the hospital and they were heaps nice to me. They cut my clothes off and looked at my arm and asked if i needed more pain relief. Yey, they gave me drugs every 15 mins from then on.
I looked at my arm and it was like the bottom half didnt match up with the top half. Claire kept telling me it looked fine.
Had x-rays taken which ill post later. Then went straight to surgery. They operated for about 3hrs. They put lots of metal in there. I am a bionic woman now.
When I got out of theatre i woke up straight away and felt fine. My boss was standing there waiting and when I got to my room there were about 6 people all standing round waiting with chocolates and games and stuff. Pretty nice, I've gotten alot of attention since the breakage. However, my face was all swollen up for some reason and it looked like when I had my wisdom teeth out. Claire took photos, Ill post them later too.
Monday
My nurses were really nice, I had Terry, Sherry and Mary-Jane. For dinner I had cajun prawn cesear salad and for breakfast I had cornflakes, yoghurt, a bannana, scrambled eggs and toasted sour dough, coffee and orange juice. In the middle of the night I woke up and the doctor was stroking my hand to see if it had feeling. Very weird, it was Dr Perry taking over from Dr Freeman cause Dr Freeman had to fly to san diago for an emergency.
Nurse tried to give me a blood test in the middle of the night but luckily I woke up cause she had the wrong room.
My drip was put right at my elbow joint cause apparently the paramedics did it wrong. So whenever i ate, it beeped cause I was bending it and stopping the flow. The nurse came in ans said I should eat with my other arm..... derrrr... thats the broken one.
Dr Perry came in the morning to talk to me about the future. He said it will take 4 months to heal and i have to have a lot of therapy. He said I probably wont be able to straighten it fully ever again but I will have enough movement to reach my mouth and my butt (he did actions to demonstrate) and that is the most important thing.
I have got a half cast and a lot of bandages at the moment. It looks like a chicken wing and I cant fit my arm in any clothes. It's very heavy. I think it comes off on monday and they put a regular cast on. Well, at least I hope. I cant do my hair or open my painkillers.
